SEMESTER I



In 2011, Broward Public Schools implemented a more rigorous curriculum to prepare students for Career and College Readiness as identified by the Common Core State Standards. A new 11th and 12th grade Improving Reading 1 and Advancing Reading 2 curriculum and texts have been deployed for the high schools.

Ten Steps to Improving College Reading Skills and Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills are the new texts for the 11th and 12th grade retake students. The following syllabus is for the new course name; Improving Reading 1 (Course Code 1000410L).

Semester I:  11th Grade Improving College Reading Skills

Day 1

Day 2 & 3

_____2. - Vocabulary Placement Test 
_____3. - Diagnostic Test  

Day 4
_____1 Introduce  Chapter One - Vocabulary in Context,
                  Benchmark Focus: Vocabulary in Context
                  Objectives:  Save time when reading by using context clues to figure out the
                                           meaning of unfamiliar words.
_____2.  Read and work through “How To Become A Better Reader” pp. 3 - 9

Homework:  Should you help a stranger? 
_____1.  ReadNight Watch by Roy Popkin Pages 41 - 42 (TP)
_____ 2.  Write: Why do people help strangers? Have you ever gone out of your way to help a stranger?  Have you seen someone else do it? Tell what the situation was and what happened.
